Natural methods are usually the best when trying to fix hair or scalp problems. Flakiness on the scalp and body are common issues facing men and women and children as well. The key is learning to recognize the real cause of such flakiness. On the body it is easily diagnosed as dry skin. Clothing absorbs the moisture and oils from our skin daily drying out the outer layer of our skin. Ex-foliating in the shower or bath with a loofah or course wash cloth removes the dry dead cells leaving a fresh new layer. When using lotions be careful to look for ingredients that will help retain the body's natural oils such as lanolin. The scalp on the other hand is prey to many other causes for flakiness.
When examining a clients scalp the first question is: What products are they using. How often are they using them and are they rinsing thoroughly. The application of shampoos and conditioners are important also. The natural inclination is to pour the shampoo or conditioner into the palm of the hand and apply directly to the top of the head. Distribution to the ends and nape (neck) area get the least amount of product usually leaving them wanting more attention. Many clients complain that the back of their neck itches and flakes. This can be cured by applyng the shampoo as well as the conditioner to the back of the head first and working your way up. RINSE WELL.
Dandruff shampoos are only good for your scalp if you indeed have dandruff. If you are not sure if your flaking is due to dandruff then begin by changing your shampoo and conditioner to one that is for NORMAL hair and add a tablespoon of BAKING POWDER to your shampoo application. Pour your shampoo into a small paper or plastic cup and add a tablespoon of baking powder to it and stir. Use this application about once a week to start and then as the flaking begins to go away use it just once a month. Follow this shampoo method by rinsing with two tablespoons of vinegar added to two cups of warm water.
People with long hair have more of a tendency not to rinse well underneath the around the neck and inside the back crown, especially those with thick hair. If possible these people should try to turn their head over in the shower so the water is able to beat down on the nape and back of the head. A hand held shower spray is extremely helpful.
Over-active Sebaceous glands release oils onto the surface that crystalize and flake giving the impression that one has dandruff. Instead of using a dandruff shampoo switch to one for oily scalp.
Medications are the largest concerns for hair loss and scalp problems. Be sure and ask your pharmacist for the paperwork on all of your medications and look for side affects like dry skin etc.
Your flat iron is your best friend. Whether you have curly, wavy or frizzy straight hair, if used correctly the flat iron is able to style the recent trends in straight, slightly "kicked"styles. By "kicked" I mean styles that are not turned up or under and not exactly straight, but the ends are pieced and just so slightly arched outwards. Separated pieces are achieved by first applying a pomade or paste to sections and using the flat iron beginning at the scalp moving straight out to slightly arching outwards at the ends. Pieces should be about an inch apart so as not to make a "flip" style affect.
It is important to use a Thermal Shield product before using any heated utensil but especially with flat irons. Invest in the best and you will be able to tell the difference in performance. Farouck Products are what Professionals use and recommend.
